Warm greetings to all members of the Academy of Clinical Microbiologists (ACM)!
One of the remarkable events that occurred in the last six months was the Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Workshop on 'Bio-safety and the Use of Technology and Knowledge Bank in Modern Medical Practice' held in Tata Medical Center (TMC), Kolkata, India, on 10 and 11 December 2018. The programme was organised by Dr. Sanjay Bhattacharya, Consultant in Microbiology at TMC, Kolkata. The CME was very special to all ACM members as it was supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. B. L. Sherwal, President, Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (IAMM), also participated in the programme.
The scientific programme on day 1 began with an interesting talk by Dr. Arpita Bhattacharyya, Consultant in Paediatric Oncology on 'Vaccination in patients with Cancer.' This was followed by another session, 'Infection Control in Bone marrow Transplantation' by Smt. Mita Roy Chowdhury, Specialist Nurse, TMC. The next speaker was Dr. Tarun Jindal, Consultant in Urological Oncology, who highlighted the importance of 'Robotic Surgery–Advantages with regard to Surgical Site Infection and Infection Control.' The Scientific Officer of Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) Mr. Debabrata Basu of TMC, Kolkata, discussed the 'Role of CSSD in infection control' in detail. The next topic was 'Management of Septic Shock' by Dr. Suresh Ramasubban, Consultant in Intensive Care, Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata. There was a seminar on Technology and Knowledge Bank on day 2. The topics were molecular microbiology-demonstration, application of hospital management system, laboratory information system and electronic medical record in healthcare settings by Dr. Gaurav Goel, air quality monitoring in high-efficiency particulate air-filtered operating rooms and bone marrow transplant unit, use of total dissolved solids and digital chlorine meter in water quality monitoring, water and sewage treatment and infection control. This was followed by a poster session. The programme was very well coordinated and was a grand success.
ACM council meeting was held in the evening of 10 December 2018. Dr. Kavita Raja, Vice President of ACM, appreciated laboratory mapping and strengthening of district laboratories by CDC. Dr. B. L. Sherwal, IAMM President, described the role of IAMM in AMR surveillance and expressed his interest to collaborate with organisations such as ACM and to maintain interdisciplinary and inter-association relations where all associations could work together along with clinicians.
